Emma married Joseph William Smith February 14, 1856, in the Wakefield parish church. At the time of their marriage, Emma was living in Wakefield, and Joseph was living in Batley Carr.
Emma and Joseph had at least five children:
1. Mary Annie Smith (b. 4/4/1857; d. 1/5/1890)
Married Alfred Mazzini Smith
2. Thomas Harper Smith (b. 12/31/1858; d. 12/24/1875)
Died young of typhus and dropsy
3. Eliza Smith (b. 3/5/1861; d. Between 1861 and 1871)

William Henry married:

Emma's husband, Joseph William Smith, worked as a woollen cloth maker, and, later, as a green grocer. He and Emma lived mostly in Batley Carr and Dewsbury, both areas in the parish of Dewsbury. At the time of the 1861 census, however, Joseph, Emma, and their children were listed as either living with, or visiting, Emma's brother, William Harper, in Stanley cum Wrenthorpe, a small town in the Wakefield, Yorkshire registration district.
Emma died at the age of 49 of apoplexy. At the time of her death she was living at 24 Upper Road, Batley Carr, near Dewsbury, in the County of York.
