This photo of Effie's tombstone was taken by her nephew Emmett Lovett at 11:00 am on 11 November 2011, a few minutes after it was installed over her urn. This Veterans Day would have been her 93rd birthday. The monument is by Charles Custom Memorials in Lake City, Florida.

When Walter was transferred to Camp Lejeune, he had to go ahead to report in and it was up to Peggy to drive his pick-up from California, across the Rockies on Route 66, to North Carolina, towing a 55-foot house trailer with all their possessions, with two children in the cab—and one of them a three-year-old. It was the most harrowing three weeks of her life. She did it without mishap, showing great fortitude in the process, but for the rest of her life she refused to even ride in a car on a mountain road. These are the post cards Effie/Peggy sent to her mother at the beginning and end of her perilous trip. Note two things: No matter what others called them, the Godwin children used the names she called them by with their mother. The address of "Mrs Frances Godwin, White Springs, Florida," was sufficient in 1956.

Judge Rutland wrote this reference when Effie applied for her second job in 1941. Her first job, for the State of Florida, had ended when her father's cousin, Governor Cone, left office.

Sadie (Seal), Frances (Bessie), Effie (Peggy), and Ruby Godwin in 1943. This photograph was probably taken at brother Johnny's wake, marking the middle of three tragedies within a year to strike the Godwin family. Johnny died three months after their father. The home place, visible behind the car to the right, was destroyed by a tornado about four months later.

Johnny Godwin with his sisters Sadie (Seal), left, and Effie (Peggy), right, in 1937, probably at sister Bessie's (Frances) wedding in August. Seal carries extra weight because her son Ken was born in April of 1937 and her son Ray in April of 1938. This photograph was restored in 2011 by their nephew Emmett Lovett.

Effie (Peggy) Godwin Shaw and Ernest (Gid) Godwin, spring 1944. Gid spent an extended leave with his sister and new niece in Philadelphia in April and May of 1944. While he was there, Peggy and Gid had this portrait made for their mother, Frances Cannon Godwin.

This was taken in early 1946 when the USS Yancey called at the Jacksonville (Fla) Naval Yard on its way back from the Pacific. It was the last ship to transit the Panama Canal in 1945, and it was bringing Army and Navy personnel home. This may have been the first time Peggy saw Walter after the war. The woman in the white dress was their waitress.
