Major League Baseball Player, Executive. For nine seasons (1934 to 1942), he played at the outfielder position with the New York Yankees. Born George Alexander Selkirk, the native of Canada marked his Major League debut on August 12th, 1934 and appeared in 46 games, recording 55 hits with a .313 batting average that year. In spite of having the difficult task of replacing Babe Ruth as the Yankees' starting right-fielder in 1935, he produced impressive numbers as he had double figures in doubles, triples and home runs, with 94 RBIs and a .312 batting average. He participated in six World Series and experienced 5 world championships (1936 to 1939, 1941). In 21 career Fall Classic contests, he recorded 18 hits with a .265 batting average. In 846 regular season games, he compiled 810 hits with a .290 lifetime batting average. He earned All-Star status twice (1936 and 1939). During World War II he served with the US Navy and upon returning home, Selkirk was a Minor League manager for eleven years, before serving as general manager of the Kansas City Athletics (1957 to 1958) and the latter Washington Senators' (1963 to 1968). He was enshrined into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.
