A ship carpenter of Kittery, Maine. Benjamin, who was actually 50 years old, enlisted as age 44 on 10 Sept 1862, and was mustered in on the 30th as a private in Company G, 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He served until the regiment's disbanding on 17 July 1863.
