U.S. Congressman. Raised on a farm, he attended Laurel County Seminary, and studied law at the University of Kentucky and at the University of Michigan. He was elected Sheriff of Leslie County, Kentucky, serving 1891-92, superintendent of schools of Leslie County (1894-98) and a member of Kentucky State House of Representatives (1900-01). Admitted to the bar, he opened a private law practice in London, Kentucky. He also was Commonwealth Attorney, (1904-09) and circuit judge of the twenty-seventh judicial district of Kentucky (1909-22, 1928-34). In 1948, he was elected as a Republican to the Eightieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Marshall Robsion, serving until 1949. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement.
