Former Greenport schoolteacher Marguerite Ione Blanchard Matthias, 93, died Nov 20 in Carlisle Pa.

She was born Sept 6, 1905 in Cortland NY to Frank and Lettie (Sears) Blanchard, and was a graduate of Cortland High School in 1923 and Cortland State Normal School in 1926.

Before marrying George Matthias in 1929, she taught English at schools in Greenport, where she resided from 1926 to 1994. She was active in Eastern Star and Greenport United Methodist Church, including the Green Group, before moving to Carlisle three years ago.

Devoted to homemaking as a wife and mother, Mrs Matthias enjoyed handiwork and crafts, including rug hooking, read a great deal and wrote poetry, according to family members.

She is survived by a son George of Montrose NY; four daughters, Barbara Comnes of Carlisle, Louise Young of Conway NH, Helene Roberts of Ocala, Fla, and Laura Izworski of Glen Oaks NY; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, two brothers and a sister predeceased her.

Interment will be at Sterling Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
