He was born in Hinsdale, Massachusetts, to Charles Wright, a prominent individual in the free soil and anti-slavery movements and one of the founders of the Republican Party in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He attended local public schools before attending the distinguished Lincoln Academy also in Hinsdale, Massachusetts. He moved to North Adams, Massachusetts, in 1861, and then entered politics. He was appointed to the post of the Chief Deputy Collector on Internal Revenue for Massachusetts's 10th District that same year. He served in that post until 1865 when he decided to engage in the mercantile business. On November 9, 1865, he married Carolyn B. Witt. He was eventually elected to the post of selectman and then went on to serve as the Commissioner for Berkshire County, Massachusetts, from 1884 to 1887, before serving as Chairman for Berkshire County, Massachusetts, for one year. He also served as a Member of the Massachusetts State Executive Council in 1890 and again in 1891. He then ran for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Republican, he then served Massachusetts's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives from 1893 to 1897. While in the United States Congress, he was Chairman of the Committee on Mileage in the Fifty-Fourth and Fifty-Fifth Congresses. He passed away in North Adams, Massachusetts, at the age of 56, while still in office from a brain hemorrhage related to a sudden stroke. He was succeeded by United States Representative George Pelton Lawrence. During his lifetime, he had become well-known for his generosity, he helped the homeless with the earnings he had made as a banker serving as a member of the investment committee of the North Adams Savings Bank, and was a churchman who helped in the affairs of the North Adams Methodist Church. He was also a Sunday school teacher in North Adams, a trustee of the Drury Academy in North Adams, a trustee of the Troy Conferences Seminary in Poultney, Vermont, and a longtime member of the Massachusetts Masons. He was buried in the Hinsdale Cemetery in Hinsdale, Massachusetts.
