US Senator. Appointed by Delaware Governor's Thomas Stockton, Joseph Maull, William Temple and William Tharp as Secretary of State of Delaware and served from 1845 to 1849. Elected to represent Delaware in the United States Senate and served from February 3, 1849 to March 3, 1851. Was one of the founder's of the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.
