He was married to Harriet Amelia Losee in 1871.
Their children: Frederic Augustus Elwood, Mary Stuart Elwood, and Madeline Elwood.
His parents: Augustus Richard Elwood and Olive Beardsley Hyde.

"Arthur Hyde Elwood died at his home in Church Street shortly after two o'clock Sunday morning, January 21st, at the age of 86 years. For several months he had been in declining health and had suffered a stroke a few days previous to his passing. The funeral was held at the home in Church Street at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The Reverend Gordon Lee Kidd, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer, former rector of St. John's Church in this village, officiated. An abbreviated Masonic service was conducted by Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482, F. & A. M., the master, Howard Crist, and George D. Caney, past master, reading the service. Interment was made in Lakeview Cemetery. Arthur Hyde Elwood was born in the Elwood home in Church Street, now the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bronner, on May 1, 1847. His father was State Senator Augustus R. Elwood and his mother was Olive Beardsley Hyde Elwood. He was educated at the Highland Military Academy, Worcester, Mass., and the Poughkeepsie Military Institute. He married Miss Hattie A. Losee, daughter of Cornelius Losee, on June 15, 1871. Mrs. Elwood died in September, 1910 ... His grandfather, County Judge James M. Hyde, was the first master of Richfield Springs Masonic Lodge, serving under dispensation in 1859 and in 1861 and 1862 after the lodge received its charter. On both sides of his family Mr. Elwood was descended from Revolutionary stock, and these ancestors were pioneers in this section. William and Mary Beardsley of Stratford-on-Avon, England, who came to Stratford, Connecticut, in 1639 were his forbears. His great grandfather, Obadiah Bearlsey [sic], came from Hoosick Falls to Schuyler Lake about 1790 and the first marriage, the first birth and the first death at Monticello in the town of Richfield were all in the Beardsley family. Levi Beardsley, Mr. Elwood's great uncle, was the author of 'Reminiscences,' a book highly valued by those interested in historical research in New York State. There survive, one son, Frederick Augustus Elwood of New York; two daughters, Mrs. William T. Welden and Miss Madeline Elwood of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren, Miss Mollie Welden of Richfield Springs, Miss Harriet E. Welden, Miss Kathleen Hyde Elwood and Arthur Hyde Elwood 2nd of New York. One grandson, William T. Welden, Jr., died in infancy. In the passing of Arthur Hyde Elwood, kindly and lovable gentleman, there closed a life remarkable and ever memorable for its devotion to family and interest in friends."
