A widely known Charlestonian and owner of a Dunbar cigar store, died yesterday following a 6-week illness.
Ellis C. England, 67, of 1401 Jackson St., died at his home. He owned the Ellis England cigar store in Dunbar 45 years.
England was a former piano player at the old Burlew Opera House during the silent movie days. He was also an employe of Majors Book Store for a time. England was born in Richmond, Va., May 22, 1894, and had lived in Charleston 65 years. His wife, Lottie Smith England, died July 26, 1960. He was a member of St. Marks Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Ross of Charleston; one niece, Mrs. William Furr of Miami, Fla., and a nephew, Rev. R. E. England of Tampa, Fla.
Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Alfred E. Bennett. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The body is at the funeral home.
