Jacob served as a Private in the Civil War 90th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he re-enlisted as a Private in Company J, 17th US Infantry. His unit was sent to Texas as part of the occupational forces. This is where he met Meddie.
They had four children:
Daughter - Capitola Ansel - born in Texas, buried in Greenwood
William Edward Ansel- born in Zanesville, buried in Greenwood - married Sophia Louisa Bohnstedt also buried at Greenwood
Harry D Ansel - born in Zanesville, buried in Greenwood
Carl G Ansel - born in Zanesville, buried at Memorial Park Zanesville
Jacob served as a policeman in Zanesville as did William
