The son and namesake of the Rev. John Youngs, a Presbyterian minister who was one of the founders of Southold, Long Island, Col. John Youngs served as "High Sheriff" of this part of New York from 1680 to 1683, and had organized and led the local militia which protected settlers from hostile Indians. He had also been appointed by the colonial governor to serve as a judge, and was active in the regional government until the year before his death at age 75. His heirs included his son, Thomas Youngs, named as the executor of his estate; his married daughters Mrs. Deborah Longworth and Mrs. Martha Gardiner; and his grandson Daniel Youngs. Col. Youngs' gravestone is one of several in this burial ground believed to have been carved in England.
