Clyde Edwin Mingus

NEWTON- Clyde Edwin Mingus of 519 North Caldwell Ave., Newton, was found dead late Saturday afternoon at his home following a period of failing health. He was 80.

Mingus was well-know for his grandfather clocks he made and his abilities as a woodworker. He was born Sept. 3, 1899, in Catawba County, to the late Calvin and Minerva Hollar Mingus. His wife, the former Ruth Kaylor, died in 1970. He was a retired weaver from the Schneider Mills in Alexander County

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Ben (Mary Lee) Miller and Mrs. Clyde (Frankie) Fortenbery of Claremont, Mrs. John (Betty) Kanipe and Mrs. Clyde (Doris) Watters of Newton, and Mrs. Ted (Pat) Setzer of Conover; 20 grand-children; 18 great-grand-children; and a brother, Ray Mingus of Taylorsville.

He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Mingus, who died in 1965 and a daughter, Nancy Shook, who died in 1975.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. C.B. Barr and the Rev. Roy Bell will conduct the service. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 o'clock tonight.

Memorials may be made to Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church in Newton, where Mingus was a member, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
