Orpha Hall was born March 18, 1874 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, daughter of William L. Hall and Lucy Catherine Weeks.

On November 15, 1893 in McKinney, Texas (Collin County), Orpha married John Walter Downs, who was born September 7, 1870 in Maury County, Tennessee.

The 1900 Federal Census for Justice Precinct 1, Texas (Collin County) shows Orpha, age 26, born March 1874 in Kentucky; and her husband, John W. Downs, a farmer, age 28, born May 1872 in Tennessee. Living with them were two children: Luddie, age 4, born August 1895; and Valine, age 1, born January 1899; both born in Texas.

The 1910 Federal Census for McKinney Ward 2, Texas (Collin County) shows Orpha, age 35, born in Kentucky; and her husband, Walter Downs, a butcher in a meat market, age 37, born in Tennessee. Living with them were five children: Luddie, age 14; Valine, age 10; Otis, age 8; Walter R., age 3; and J.B., age 2 months; all born in Texas.

The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 3, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Orpha, age 44, born in Kentucky; and her husband, J. W. Downs, a stock farmer, age 48, born in Tennessee. Living with them were four children: Valine, a bank bookkeeper, age 20; Otis, a stenographer for an abstract office, age 18; Walter Ray, age 13; and J.B., age 9; all born in Texas.

The 1930 Federal Census for Durant Ward 3, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Orpha, age 56, born in Kentucky; and her husband, J. W. Downs, county agent, age 59, born in Tennessee. Living with them was their son, J. B. Downs, age 20, born in Texas.

The 1940 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Orpha, age 65, born in Kentucky; and her husband, John W. Downs, an independent farmer, age 69, born in Tennessee.

John died July 7, 1949 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in the Highland Cemetery. Orpha died September 22, 1959 in Durant and was buried in Highland Cemetery beside her husband.
