Prominent Southern California politician. A native of Los Angeles, Hahn was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1947 at the age of 27. Five years later he ran for and was elected to the L. A. County Board of Supervisors, beginning a career that would last through forty years and ten elections. Hahn worked tirelessly for the establishment of numerous county-funded institutions, most notably the Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital, L. A. County Paramedic Services and various rapid transit systems. His largely black constituency voted for him repeatedly, knowing that he was dedicated to provide critical services irrespective of race or economic status. Although he never sought higher office during his long career, he became a key figure and power broker in both California and national Democratic Party politics. Hahn retired from public life in 1992, and was the father of L. A. Mayor James Hahn.
