Walter moved with his family to Kansas when he was 8 years old. He joined the Methodist Church of Randall, Kansas. Walter was a graduate of Randall High School and completed a business course at Wesleyan Business College in Salina, Kansas.
He married Eva Fearing in Burr Oak, Kansas on June 30, 1915. In 1921 they moved to Kimberly, Idaho where Walter farmed until retiring in 1957. At the time of his death Walter was a member of the Methodist Church of Kimberly, Idaho.
