Funeral Rites Today For J. P. Flournoy, Jr. – Brother of Sheriff Dies of Heart Attack at Baton Rouge

James Patterson Flournoy, Jr., a brother of Sheriff J. Howell Flournoy, of Caddo Parish, died yesterday morning at Baton Rouge following a heart attack suffered a few hours earlier.

Mr. Flournoy's home is at 658 Topeka Street, Shreveport, but for the past few months he had been connected with the state land office at Baton Rouge.

Mr. Flournoy, 65, was born at Forest Park, a few miles from Greenwood, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson Flournoy, Sr. His father was a former sheriff of Caddo Parish. He was educated in the parish schools and later became a member of his father's office force. He was at one time associated with the late Lee Kinnebrew in the oil business, and at the time of his death was connected with the state land office at Baton Rouge.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Clara Johnson Flournoy, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joe Bath of Natchitoches, Mrs. Ed Gay of Little Rock, Mrs. Walter Patterson of Shreveport; four brothers, Sheriff Flournoy of Shreveport, Cannon Flournoy of Alexandria, Ted Flournoy of Greenwood, George Flournoy of Houston, Texas; and a sister, Miss Margaret Flournoy of Shreveport.

The body was accompanied to Shreveport last night by Mrs. Lucille May Grace, register of the state land office, and T. R. Hughes, assistant superintendant of state police and former Caddo Parish sheriff. It was taken to Rose-Neath Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today by Dr. James M. Owens, rector of St. Marks Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be S. J. Flores, T. R. Hughes, Jesse S. Moore, John Abel, Sr., Ed Harris, L. T. Rogers, Arthur G. Birdwell and George V. Bryson.

Honorary pallbearers will be all employees of the Caddo Parish sheriff department, J. B. Vaughan, V. G. Simmons, S. O. Lawton, Mrs. Lucille May Grace, W. T. Mayo, John M. Mays, Glenn Flournoy, James M. McClurg, Ed R. Mading, Judge Robert J. O'Neal, Judge E. P. Mills, Judge Chris Barnette, Stewart B. Jenkins, Bradford Thweatt, D. D. Bazer, Hal M. Gatti, Jacob C. Embry, Alten O. Graves, T. C. Patterson, Claudius B. Dickson, O. Kenneth Hickman and Mr. Hyatt of Baton Rouge.
