Mary Lou Carden Clayton (1924 - 2011)

Mary Lou Carden Clayton, 86, passed away at 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2011, at a local assisted-living facility. Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: May be made to Arborlawn United Methodist Church Building Fund, 5001 Briarhaven Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76109.

Born Nov. 15, 1924, in Fort Worth to John Richard and Grace Hamilton Burford, Mary Lou grew up on the north side. She graduated from Texas Woman's University in 1946 with a B.S. in elementary education, which she put to good use as a teacher. A consummate hostess and civic-minded friend, she served in various positions and offices, including as board member of Dallas Baptist University, PTA president, president (and other positions) of the Opti-Mrs. Club, and board member of the Woman's Club. When not fulfilling those positions, she could be found being mom and "Me-maw" to her family and participating in activities with "the Golden Girls" - her special circle of lifelong friends. She was always active in church and was a member of Arborlawn United Methodist Church for many years until her death. We love you and we will see you again! "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep." I Thessalonians 4:13-14. Mary Lou's first husband, Weldon G. Carden, with whom she had three children, passed away in 1982. She was also predeceased by her sons, Jim Carden and Richard Carden.

Survivors: Husband of 25 years, Jack C. Clayton; daughter, Sharon Carroll; daughters-in-law, Jeanie Carden and Jan Carden; grandchildren, Joshua Carden, Jason Carden, Jennifer Olmstead, Jonathan Carden, Kimberly Carroll, Christopher Carroll, Claire Carden and Caroline Carden; and great-grandchildren, Vivian Carden and Eva Carden.
