Kern Funeral Held Sunday
The funeral service for Mrs. John (Harriet) Kern was held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Nash Funeral Home with the Rev. John Hodgson, minister of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was made in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. A. W. Kuchemann, G. R. Eggleston, Charles McDermott, Harry Green, Ronald Northcraft, and Elmer Thies were the casketbearers.
Mrs. John Kern (see Harriet Bodell) was born in Galena on October 10, 1872, the daughter of Hugh and Margaret (Bruce) Bodell. She spent most of her life in Galena. She received her education in the Galena Public school and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. In June 1889 {sic, marriage record shows 18 Jul 1889) she was united in marriage to John Kern of Galena. Mrs. Kern was visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. J. Mann in Chicago, when she became ill and was taken to the Garfield Park Community Hospital where she passed away at 12:45 on Thursday afternoon, October 15, 1953 at the age of 81 years and 5 days. Death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage. Surviving are a son and three daughters, Albert W. Kern, L. W. (Pearl) Ehret, Galena; R. J. (Marjorie) Mann, Chicago and Harriet Kern of Galena. Mrs. Kern was the youngest member of a family of ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and five brothers. Also preceding her in death were her husband; a son, John, Jr.; and two grandsons, Edward and Robert Kern.
