Lawyer, Judge, Botanist, and Author. An 1854 graduate of Harvard University Law School, he was one of New York's most distinguised jurists when appointed by President James A. Garfield to the United States District Court, Southern District of New York, which he served on from 1881 to 1901. He was also a respected botanist who helped found the New York Botanical Garden and authored the three-volume "An Illustrated Flora of the Northern United States, Canada, and the British Posessions."
