Author. She was a prolific writer of historical fiction and mysteries geared towards children and young adults, including the "Orphan Train Adventure" series. Born February 3, 1927 in Los Angeles, California, she became interested in writing at an early age, publishing her first poem when she was ten years old. She attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and took a temporary position as a kindergarten and 1st grade teacher in the Los Angeles city schools. During her life, she published over 140 books, including "The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore" (1979), "The Séance" (1980), "The Stalker" (1985), "Secret, Silent Dreams" (1988), "The Island of Dangerous Dreams" (1989), "A Candidate for Murder" (1990), "A Deadly Promise" (1991), "Spirit Seeker" (1995), "Search for a Shadowman" (1996), "The Haunting" (1998), "Playing for Keeps" (2001), and "The Trap" (2002). She received many honors, including four Edgar Allan Poe Awards from Mystery Writers of America, two Western Writers of America's Golden Spur Awards, and two California Young Reader Medals from the California Library Association. Her novel "The Other Side of Dark" (1966), was the basis for the 1995 television movie "Awake to Danger" that starred Tori Spelling and Michael Gross. In 2002 she published her memoirs, "The Making of a Writer." She died from pancreatic cancer in Houston, Texas at the age of 76. Her final book, "Nightmare," was published posthumously in September 2003.
