Helmsman

He was born in Charlottenburg, and had been an officer in the Merchant Marines as well as an experienced pilot. He was hired by Deutsche Zepplin Reederei as an officer candidate, and was serving aboard the Hindenburg as a helmsman.

He survived the initial crash and fire, and died the following morning. His body was not identified until after his death.

Bernhardt rests in a common grave with other members of the Hindenburg crew.
