“Daniel was from Plains Mill, Virginia, and he married the daughter of John Bowers, Sr. of Plains Mill in 1814. The couple moved to Pennsylvania with a large group of Elizabeth’s siblings. Elizabeth is named as Daniel’s wife on the 1850 Census, and is living as widow in household of their son Samuel on the 1860 and 1870 (aged 61, 71 and 78, respectively.) Her grave has not been found; she may well be buried in Iowa, because on the 1880 Census Samuel’s household is now in Melville, Audubon County, IA. The details of the move from Plains Mill, VA to Pennsylvania are given in the litigation “Bowers v. Woods/Woods v. Bowers” (Augusta 1826-020) viewable on the Chancery website of the Library of Virginia. The 1860 and 1870 Census place Elizabeth’s birth in PA, and in fact according to the litigation John Bowers, Sr. had only come to Plains Mill in 1811, having previously been a resident of Adams County, PA. There are appropriate age-gender slots available for Elizabeth in the household of John Bowers 1800 and 1810 at Mt. Joy, Adams County.” Any questions, feel free to write [email protected]. Thanks.

UPDATE: Upon further study of Bowers v. Woods and the censuses, it appears now that Daniel Coffman and Philip Bowers moved to Clearfield Co., PA together, between 1815 and 1818, without being accompanied by any other parties. The friends and relatives who moved to that region began arriving around 1820, with the majority around 1823-24. Contrary to what is found in the books, there was not a single grand move of all parties.

I was on Ancestry and went to U.S., Presbyterian Church Records, 1701-1970 Jefferson Cumberland Presbyterian Church
Register, Baptisms, and Deaths
1836 - 1890 Punxsutawney PA
When I looked at the Old Cumberland Presbyterian Church records starting in 1836 I found Daniel and wife Elizabeth Bowers Coffman. These and other members of the Bowers Settlement were some of the Early members of this church.
