U.S. Congressman. He studied law in the office of Martin Van Buren, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced to practice law in Cooperstown, New York. He was Cooperstown master in chancery in 1815, division judge advocate Colonel of the 21st Division of Infantry, New York Militia, in 1819, counselor in the supreme court and solicitor in chancery in 1823, surrogate of Seneca County, (1827-37), a New York bank commissioner. In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1838, district attorney of Seneca County in 1846 and Postmaster of Waterloo, New York, (1853-63).
