Gertrude and Walburn Winfield Pence applied for a marriage license and were married the same day, 6 September 1924 - the day after Gertrude turned 18 years of age. Walburn was just weeks short of turning 20 at the time. It's doubtful this marriage met with the approval of her parents, and for whatever reason, it was short lived. In later marriage records, neither Gertrude nor Wilburn claimed their first marriage, as it was probably annulled. Walburn married again just 9 months later, his second of at least five marriages.
Gertrude married Lysle V. Pence in Fort Wayne on 1 January 1928, having applied for their license on 30 December 1927. A son, Ronald, was born to the couple in 1943, but he was reportedly killed at the age of 18 in an auto accident. She worked as a nurse's aide at St. Joseph's Medical Center and Lutheran Hospital. She was a resident of St. Ann Nursing Home at the time of her death.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and son; her brothers, Harold Francis and Robert L.; her sisters, Vera and Helen; and a nephew, Robert James Hoy. She was survived by two nephews, William Francis Hoy of Florida, and Charles Bishop Hoy of Chicago.
