Arrest of Charles Frederick Lindauer I (1836-1921) reported in The Times of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1879: "Lottery Agents Arrested. Anthony Comstock Raid. Held For Unlawfully Using the Mails. New York, November 11, 1879. Anting on complaints made by Anthony Comstock, agent of the Society for the Suppression of Vice and Special Agent of the Post Office Department, some twenty warrants were issued yesterday, by United States Commissioner Shields, for the arrest of dealers in lottery tickets. The Times says that these warrants charged the dealers named in them with sending lottery tickets and circulars pertaining to lotteries through the mails, in violation of the United States statute on the subject. A simultaneous descent was made upon the various office, from Nassau street to Broadway, at Thirty-first street. The first dealer arrested was B. Nathan, of Nos. 179 and 830 Broadway, who at once gave bail before the Commissioner in the sum of $1,000 to await examination. Soon afterward John Duff of No. 49 Nassau street, and A. Orlando Jackson, of No. 92 Nassau street, were arrested, and in like manner they gave bail for their future appearance. These raptures were followed at intervals by the arrest of C. F. Lindauer, W. L. Crayton, E. W. Harriman, C. Defreese, J. Williamson of Williamson & Co., and R. N. Potter, all Broadway dealers, and mostly from little nooks of offices between Twenty-fifth and Thirtieth street. Theodore Zschoch, of No. 17 Park place and No. 861 Broadway; J. Wachsman, of Wachsman & Co., No. 84 Nassau street, and W. A. Martine, of No. 10 Wall street, wore also arrested. In the rases where the prisoners had bone under arrest previously for the same offense they were hold in $1,000 bail. and from these who had not before been charged with the offense only $500 bail was required, Most of them, however, were old offenders and had to give the higher amount."

Peter, who works for Charles Frederick Lindauer I (1836-1921) in Rye, New York injured, as reported in the Port Chester Journal on April 28, 1892: "An old man named 'Peter,' in the employ of Mr. C. F. Lindauer, of Locust Avenue, while driving through Pearl St., Port Chester near the shirt factory on Westchester Ave. met with an accident which came near being serious. In nearing the Avenue the bit broke in the horse's mouth, and It started to run, and the man being unable to guide it, it ran into a telegraph post, knocking him and the seat into the street, smashing the seat and hurting him quite badly in the back. He was picked up and brought to his home here in a hack. His back seamed to be terribly bruised, and it was with the greatest difficulty that he could sit up."

Charles Frederick Lindauer I (1836-1921) in the 1860 census in Manhattan. He may have been deliberately obscuring his name to avoid law enforcement. He is listed as Charles Linden and his wife as Anne Augusta Linden. They are
Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921) and Anna Augusta Kershaw Lindauer (1841-1931). He again listed himself as a "broker" which was his quasi-legal lottery business reselling lottery tickets for out-of-state lotteries, that were legal in the state issuing them. This was actually just a front his completely illegal numbers-game racket. According to the Lexow Commission his "small-fry" territory was the Greenwich Village area.

Lindauers suspected of the Baldwin Robbery reported in the New-York Daily Tribune on 25 January 1866: "Jewelry Robbery. The examiner in the case of Charles and Lewis Lindauer of New-York, on a charge of being implicated in the robbery of $9,000 worth of jewelry from the manufactory of Baldwin & Co. at Newark, was concluded before Justice Sandford yesterday The Justice considered the evidence sufficiently conclusive to warrant this bold log of the parties for the section of the Grand Jury, and therefore committed them is default of bail."

Charles Frederick Lindauer I (1836-1921) and Louis Julius Lindauer (1838-1915) arrested in 1866 for a robbery posted in the Newark Daily Advertiser of Newark, NJ on January 23, 1866: "The Baldwin Robbery. The examination of Charles Lindauer, one of the persons suspected of participating In the Baldwin robbery, some time since, was continued yesterday afternoon before Justice Sandford. Liudauer persistently denies his guilt, alleging that he was in New York on the night of the robbery. Lewis Lindauer, the brother of Charles, being examined; said that the first time he was in this city before his arrest was on the 5th of December, and that he was not in the jewelry establishment of Messrs. Baldwin & Co., a few mornings previous to the robbery. He had not seen Charles in possession of any jewelry for the last two months. David Van Orden, an employee of Baldwin & Co., testified as to the. appearance of things at the factory after the discovery of the robbery. He recollected two men calling at the factory about two weeks previous to the robbery, about 6 1/2 o'clock, A. M., and thought he recognized one of the prisoners (Charles). On the morning of the same day he saw in Broad street two men who looked the persons accused. Timothy Crane, an apprentice, fully recognized Charles as one of the persons who visited the factory. The investigation is still in progress."

Charles Frederick Lindauer I (1836-1921) named by the Lexow Commission for being in the numbers game: "Q. He is called the king of the policy dealers, isn't he? A. Yes; and there is Jake Shipsey; he is another big man; Cornelius P. Parker, and Billy Meyers, and Ed. Hogan, and Charlie Lindauer, Dick Gammon ..."

Charles Frederick Lindauer I (1836-1921) and Louis Julius Lindauer (1838-1915) in the 1872 New York City directory. Both are working as "brokers". In 1872 Louis was working at 272 Bowery Street as a "broker" and living at 13 Charlton Street. In 1872 Charles was working at 148 Mercer Street as a "broker" and living at 192 Bleeker Street.

Jersey City, June 1, 1889. August Mueller, who was the collector in this city for Lindauer & Co., tobacconist, was sent to jail this morning for contempt of court. His employers were dissatisfied with his returns and had a receiver appointed to examine his accounts. Mueller refused to surrender his books and his arrest followed.
