Death of Loumus Berry

Loumus Berry died at his home in Baldwin yesterday morning at 9 o'clock after a long illness of consumption. For the last three years he had been gradual failing and for some time prior to his death he was unable to leave the house. His wife was at his side singing gently to him.

The funeral will be held at the home of deceased in Baldwin tomorrow, (Friday) afternoon at 1 o'clock, and the interment will be in the family burial ground at the farm. Rev. Gratz will officiate.

Mr. Berry was one of the old pioneers of this section. He was born in Brownville, Maine, April 17, 1839. He was married in 1860, to Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Daniel and Sarah, and at the outbreak of the war he enlisted as a private in Company A, 6th Maine Volunteers, also known as the "Brownville Rifles", and served for three years. He was promoted to a corporal and was in twenty-one of the most important battles of the civil war and at Rappahannock Station while acting as color bearer he received five gun shot wounds all at one time, and was in the hospital for some time. He was honorably discharged from the army in October, 1864.
Mr. Berry was one of the first members of Wallace T. Rines post and many of his old comrades will attend the funeral.

In 1867 he came west and located in Baldwin, homesteading the land in section 2 on which he resided until his death

Mr Berry is survived by a wife and six children, four boys and two girls all of whom were at home at his bedside when he passed away.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Jemima Young Berry. A brother Charles H., died at Andersonville prison. Also, 2 sons: Norman, as a child in Brownville and Raymond, in a hunting accident., Frank in 1885.

For the last sixteen years he was town clerk of Baldwin and has been County commissioner of Sherburne county as well as holding many minor offices.

Mr. Berry's life was one of hard work and usefulness and he was highly esteemed by all who knew him.
