Amory was one of the founders of Maynard. Because he was a key person to turn the Assabet Village (as Maynard was previously known) from a simple farming community to a major manufacturing town, the town's people voted to name the newly created town Maynard in Amory's honor.

From his birth in 1804 until 1843 he lived in Marlborough Massachusetts. During this time dropped out of school as a young teen to work in his father's sawmill and farm. His father died and Amory took over his father's business interests at only age 16 running a successful business in carpentry, building and contracting. It as during this time that he met and married Mary Priest in 1826.

He and his wife later moved to what was then Assabet Village to continue his business operations after the city of Boston took over the water right to the pond in Marlborough which caused his sawmill to lose rights over the use of that location. He and William Knight form Assabet Mills in 1846.

The town of Maynard incorporates in 1871.
