Sylvester and his sister Julia made a trip to Athens, Illinois in February of 1893 to visit their brother, Levi. Sylvester brought gifts of fine gloves for the entire family. He worked in Johnstown, NY as a cartman and delivered skins to various homes to be cut and sewn by glove makers.
Sylvester's first wife was Margaret M. Platts, and they had one daughter, Nancy M. (Mrs, Wesley) Frederick. They also adopted their nephew, John E. Platts aka John E. Klock, a son of Margaret's brother, James A. Platts. Sylvester's second wife was Cornelia Nickloy, a widow with two children by her first marriage to Arthur Plamondon: Frederick and Ida J. Plamondon. Sylvester was a member of the Baptist Church as well as the Exempt Fireman's Association.
