Ellen Davis was the daughter of Lewis Davis and Mary Susan Benton. Following the death of Lewis Davis, Susan Davis married John Robertson Purvines, a widower who had relocated to Crawford Co., MO from Sangamon Co., IL. Thus, Ellen's step-father became her link to Sangamon and Menard Counties in Illinois where she met her husband.

Ellen Davis married Franklin C. Stevenson on 31 December 1890 in Menard Co., IL. Frank and Ellen were the parents of six children: Nellie M., Arvie Pearl, Oakley B., Mary Louise, Talva L., and Leonard C.

This family lived in Cartwright Township, Sangamon Co., IL; however in the 1930 census they can be found in Granite City, Madison Co., IL where Frank and Leonard both worked in a steel foundry.
