John Frett emigrated from Germany with his parents and siblings, arriving at Port of New York on 2 August 1841 aboard the ship Albany. Their family along with the families of Jacob Schmitt and Nicolas Adams, were the founders and first three families to settle in what would become Johnsburg, the parents of these families established the church and parish of St John the Baptist Catholic Church" ~

John Frett married Anna Maria Gerhard, daughter of Mathias Gerhard and Ann Maria Müller, sometime before 15 November 1848, the birth date of their first child born. Anna's mother died in Oberbaar, Germany on 30 April 1839. Anna Gerhard emigrated from Germany with her father and siblings, they arrived at the Port of New York on 24 August 1842.

John and Anna were the parents of twelve known children: Nicolas (Fredericka Meitzner), Barbara (Peter Weber), Michael (Gertrude Lenz), Peter, Mathias (Elizabeth Lesch), Margaretha (John Simon), Rosa (William Niehoff), William, Maria Helena (Adam Schillo), Maria Catharina (twin of Martin), Martin and Susanna
