WM. MIEHE, Sr.
Wm. Miehe, (Sr.) son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Miehe, was born in Dubuque county, Iowa, June 13, 1863, and came to Fayette county with his parents in the early 70's, settling on a farm 3 1/2 miles southwest of Maynard, where he grew to young manhood.
On March 4, 1886, he was united in marriage to Henrietta Gremmels. They began housekeeping on a farm 4 1/2 miles southwest of Maynard, where they lived for 34 years. To this union five children were born. Ilda, the eldest daughter, preceded her father in death in 1913.
Having come to Fayette county in the early 70's, Mr. Miehe was privileged to note the changes and progress of the community in which he lived.
In 1920 they purchased a home in Maynard, and retired from active farming, their son, Wm. Jr., taking over the farm.
On March 4, 1936, Mr. and Mrs. Miehe observed their 50th wedding anniversary and on March 4 of this year they were privileged to celebrate their 57th anniversary.
On Oct 2 he was stricken with the "flu" from which he never fully recovered. On Oct. 5 he passed away in spite of all that loving hands and medical skill could do. He had attained the age of 80 years, 3 mo., 22 days. He is survived by his faithful companion of 57 years; two sons, Carl and Will Jr.; two daughters, Frieda (Mrs. Henry Schrader) and Henrietta (Mrs. Ralph Pliester); ten grand- children and four great-granddaughters, all of this vicinity. One grandson, Alfred Miehe SI/c is with the U. S. Navy overseas, He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Hannah Lembka, of California, Mrs. John Meyer, Mrs. Otto Schmitt and Mrs. Byron Odekirk, all of Maynard, and four brothers, Fred of Swea City, Theodore, Albert and John of Maynard, besides a host of friends and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Lutheran church, Rev. H. F. Hein officiating. Interment in Long Grove Cemetery.
