Edward Haymond was the oldest son of Calder and Eleanor Owen Haymond. His grandfather was John Haymond who was born about 1700. John was a carpenter by trade. Family tradition says John came to America to build a house for a wealthy plantation owner. John married Margaret Calder on 22 August 1723.

Edward was born 6 January 1755 in Montgomery Co. Maryland. In 1773, Edward came west with his father, Calder, and his uncle William Haymond. They settled in the area of what is now Prickett's Fort. Edward's first land claim was on Little Paw Paw Creek, and his cabin stood where Baxter now is.

At the age of 21, within 60 days of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, Edward took up arms. On 26 August 1776, he enlisted in the 8th Penn. Regiment, in Capt. John Wilson's Co. and marched up the Allegheny against the Native Americans, and then to Philadelphia. He was transferred to Morgan's Rifle Regiment and served one year. When his regiment was detached to Pittsburgh he was ordered to join it, and there served under Col. Daniel Brodhead. He received his discharge from Lt. Col. Stephen Bayard. He spent 5 years in the army and fighting the Native Americans, and he took part in the battles of Saratoga and Monmouth.

On 18 January 1780, he married Sarah Woodfin. Sarah's father was killed by the Native Americans at Kerns Fort. Edward and Sarah lived on his 400 acres on the right hand fork of Wickware Creek and Haw Run, in what is now Taylor Co. West Virginia.

Edward and Sarah were the parents of eleven children. Starting in December of 1815 illness hit the Haymond family, their youngest child, Asa, at age 3 died. Within 11 days in August of 1816, Edward buried both his wife, Sarah, and their 8 year old daughter, Sarah. This was followed by a married daughter Rebecca Haymond Moore in September 1816 and finally their 12 year old son James in October 1816. Edward had lost his wife and four children in ten months.

Edward took his remaining family and went to Indiana where his father, Calder, and younger brother John had moved in 1810. Edward's oldest son, John, remained in West Virginia. Edward bought a tract of land where Brookville, Franklin Co. Indiana, is located.

Edward went back to West Virginia on a visit and applied for a pension. The pension was approved, but before he drew payment he suffered a stroke. Edward died at the home of his son, John, on 14 June 1820. He was buried in the Haymond Cemetery with his wife Sarah and their three young children. The Haymond Cemetery is on land that belonged to their oldest son John.

The DAR gathered at the Haymond Cemetery 12 August 1975 to dedicate a marker in recognition of Edward Haymond, a Revolutionary War soldier. It is this stone that marks his grave.
