On 3 Mar 1869 Lewis Purchased the Walker farm located on Millstone Hill. On the farm Dark Granite (High Quality) was found. In 1875 The R.R. came to Barre. Now Granite could be shipped much easier. In 1876 He Joined the Congrational Church of Barre. in 1889 Richard A Hoar (son-in-law) joins the business. Eventually Acme Granite Co buys the Business and it becomes Rock Of Ages the largest Granite firm in the world. Note: Barre Population in 1880 was 2000 and in 1910 12,200. Obit---- "Lewis Keith who died at his house recently in Barre, was one of the oldest farmers in Barretown and the owner of nearly every piece of land in Graniteville and Websterville on which granite quarries have been developed. He was born in Barre 1831, son of Francis and Persis (Bigelow) Keith early settlers, and his marriage to Nancy F Wilson took place in 1858. His wife survives along with one daughter Mrs Richard A Hoar of Barre, a sister Agnes K Lorverin of Chicago and brother Clinton of East Hardwick. Mr Keith had served as Selectman, Lister, and school Commissioner of schools.
