Virginia Governor. He was successful merchant, served as a Captain in the Virginia Militia and was Deputy Clerk of Washington County, Virginia, (1802-12). During the War of 1812, he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Governor James Barbour. Returning briefly to military service, he was a National Guard Brigadier General of the 3rd Brigade of Virginia and Colonel of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry. He then served as Clerk of Washington County, was a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1820-24) and as Washington County Clerk, until 1837. On 1837, he was elected as a Democrat the 27th Governor of Virginia, serving until 1840. During his term in office, laws for the relief of banks and debtors in Virginia was passed. After leaving office, he was Justice of the Peace of Washington County.
