Susan, often called Susanna, was the daughter of John Cowan Swann and Sarah Duggan Swann. She grew up on the family farm along with seven siblings. The family moved from Tennessee to Cherokee, County Alabama when Susan was 2. When she was 12, she made a daring escape, along with her mother and siblings, under guard from Gen. Sherman, back to East Tennessee, where her father, who had been a prisoner of the Confederates, was already waiting for them.
Susan married farmer John Henry Nichols. The eight children of the couple were George Walter, Anna Jane Swann Fox, Augusta Cynthia Swann, Elizabeth M. Swann Wilson, John Cecil Swann, Donald M. Swann, Carl D.Swann, and Kenneth C. Swann. Sadly, four of the eight died of tuberculosis. Susan was their nurse. The disease did not take her, and she lived to the age of 87.
