George was descendant of the fifth generation of Col. James Douglass, who came to Maryland circa 1654. George, was a volunteer soldier when Baltimore was under siege in 1814. He eventually moved to Baltimore to work with his brother, Richard, in the shipping and mercantile business. He moved to New York City after ten years and became a commission merchant in trade with the West Indies. By 1837 he had acquired a large fortune and retired until his death. He was a contributor to many charitable and civic activities. George was the father of seventeen children, of whom ten lived to adulthood. When he married in 1858, Mary McElderry, his wife was known as "the belle of Baltimore" because of her wit and beauty. George died of congestion of the lungs.
