U.S. Congressman. He attended Hamilton Academy and Madison College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849 and practiced law in Hamilton, New York. He served as justice of the peace for Hamilton (1849-79), was Hamilton city attorney for many years, was Madison County Judge (1864-67) and served as federal collector of internal revenue for the Madison County district (1871-76). In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his position as justice of the peace for Hamilton, until 1904 and practiced of law until his death.
