His original name was Nikita Hanganut, and he was born in Prundul-Bistrita, Romania. Sometime between coming to America and entering the US Army he became known as Michael Hans.

In the picture is his wife Maria aka Mary Hunan Hans. She was born in 1891 and is buried in Romania. The other women, in the center, is Mary Hans the niece of Michael Hans.
