The son of Ezra Ellsworth and Roxana Laiton Ellsworth was born 1 April 1833 in Essex County, New York the youngest in a large family. Because of his father's death and his mother's inability to care for so many children the youngest ones were indentured to Nathan and Roxanna Slaughter. He stayed with this family after his indenture had expired and even made the trip to Iowa in their company. He married Clarissa Daniels while still living in Essex County, New York where they stayed with her father for a time before they traveled to Clayton County, Iowa in 1856. They had 5 boys and 5 girls. All the girls died before the age of 8.
