Blues Musician, Singer. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Crutchfield left home at an early age and found work in sawmills and lumber camps of Louisiana and Texas. After meeting pianist Little Brother Montgomery who taught him to play "Forty-Four Blues," he moved to St. Louis in 1948. He worked in clubs with artists such as John Bentley, Henry Brown and Roosevelt Sykes. In the early 1980s, he toured parts of Europe and recorded an album for the Swingmaster label in Holland. He released an album on the Munich label in Germany and was represented by six cuts on the Delmark "Biddle Street Barrlehousin'" release. Biddle Street is a street in St. Louis that was noted for a thriving blues scene in the 1920s and 1930s and particularly noted for dozens of fine pianists. Until his death, he played weekly at the Venice Cafe in St. Louis, accompanied by the great Bennie Smith.
