Oil City Derrick 22 Aug 1903:
Well-Known Venango County Farmer Fell Under Reaper
Moses Walls, aged 53 years, a well-known Venango County farmer, fell beneath a reaper about 1 o'clock on Thursday afternoon and was so badly hurt that he died about an hour later. The scene of the accident was the farm owned by F. L. Kahle, of Franklin, located on the Oil City and Titusville road about six miles north of Oil City. The reaper was drawn by a yoke of oxen and Mr. Walls was driving home for dinner. A chain attached to the front of the reaper became entangled and Mr. Walls got down in front of the reaper to replace it when the oxen, frightened, started to run away. Mr. Walls, realizing the danger jumped up and succeeded in getting on the tongue of the machine, yet was unable to regain the seat. He rode in this manner until he was within a few (unreadable) of his own home when the oxen made a sudden turn and this threw him from the tongue of the reaper. The big drive wheels of the reaper passed over his stomach and chest, crushing him in a terrible manner.

His wife and daughter were eyewitnesses to the terrible accident and were powerless to do anything to prevent it. They reached him almost as soon as the ponderous wheels had passed over him and carried him into the house. Neighbors arrived and a messenger was sent to Titusville for a surgeon. Dr. Hazen responded, but Mr. Walls was dead before his arrival. The patient was conscious from the time of the accident until his death and suffered much agony.

He is survived by a wife and nine children: Mrs. Vira Vandergrift, Sharpsville: Mrs. Emma Greggs, Franklin: Mrs. Susan Kelly, Reno and the following at home: W. Walls, John and Moses Walls, sons: Anna, Etta, May and Sarah.

The funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock this morning at the family residence and the interment will be in the Dempseytown cemetery.
