Deborah Ann Patterson was born in 1829 in Surry County, North Carolina, the oldest daughter of Wiley Patterson and Lucinda Davis. Her parents were both born in North Carolina and married there in 1825. They reared their family in North Carolina but moved to Cumberland County, Kentucky before 1868, where both of them likely died.

Deborah married John Wesley Needham in 1846 in Surry County, North Carolina. All but two of their children were born there but the family moved to Cumberland, Kentucky, before 1868, likely at the same time her parents did. Their last two children were born in 1868 and 1873 in Kentucky. Deborah's husband died in Cumberland, Kentucky in 1889 and was buried in Dutch Creek Cemetery. She and the children remaining at home moved to Pendleton, Bell County, Texas about 1890, and her youngest sons, Jesse and Walter, married there in 1892. By 1900 Deborah and several of her children had moved to Cooke County in North Texas, where in 1900 she was living with son, Jesse Needham, and his family. Jesse and Kate Needham moved to Joshua, Johnson County, Texas about 1901 taking Deborah with them. She died there in 1904 and was buried in Caddo Cemetery.
