Golde was born c.1865 near what was then Dolina, in the Austrian crown land of Galicia. The town is now Dolyna, Ukraine.


She was the daughter of Avram Yakov Freilich and Chana Lustig .


Golde was widowed in late February 1900, when her husband, Susman (Zusye) Friedlander, died of pneumonia in a hospital in Stryj, Galicia. At the time, the family lived in Cerkowna (now Tserkovna, Ukraine). About three years later she and most of her children immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. She lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and later in Brooklyn.


Among Golde's many siblings was Fannie (Feige) Spruch, who is buried near her at Mount Hebron.
