A sufferer of depression and melancholy most of his life, he committed suicide by ingesting five bottles of arsenate and strychnine in Hôtel de Nice, in the Parisian neighborhood of Montmartre (Rue Victor-Massé, 29). He was a close friend of Fernando Pessoa, Portugal's greatest poet.
