Major League Baseball Player. He was nicknamed 'Brewery Jack' because of his fondness for beer. Pitching for one of the hardest hitting teams ever in baseball history, the 1894-1897 Philadelphia Phillies, he won 85 games. His career high was 26 wins in 1895. It would also prove to be the final year in which he would pitch to a winning record. In 1896 he managed to lose 21 games, although he did also win 20. His final year in Philly saw him slump to 16-20 record, after which, he was traded off to the St. Louis Maroons in 1898. 1899 proved to be his final year in the majors as he went 9-10 for Cincinnati. His health slowly began to deteriorate during the 1899 campaign. Diagnosed with Bright's Disease, he died at his home in the New Brighton section of Staten Island. He was only 26 years old. Jack's mother, Phoebe Ann Taylor, predeceased him by only 17 days. Over the course of 9 season, he accrued a 120-117 record with a 4.23 era with 7 shutouts and 9 saves in 270 league games.
