Henry Kuntz was born in Berks County, PA, the son of Jacob Kuntz and Anna Margaretha Liebenguth. His father emigrated from Alsace in 1738 with his parents and siblings. While in Berks county, Henry served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the Berks County Militia, Captain Ferdinands' Company of the 3rd Battalion. Henry was a Potter by trade up until the time he relocated to Unity township, Westmoreland county. There he engaged in farming. Henry was one of the early leaders of the St. James Lutheran Church in Youngstown. Prior to the original log church being built, services were often held at the homes of either Henry or his son Daniel. When the church was first built, the first Communicant record listed only Henry, wife Catherina, and son Daniel and wife.
