Henry was five foot ten inches tall with gray eyes and black hair at the age of twenty-one years old. He married Cecilia Christein and their children are: Amos Christian Spencer, Oscar Spencer, Blanche Spencer Bossong, Bessie Spencer-Gruell-Grueninger and Alice Spencer Daugherty-Finch.

Sgt. Henry Oscar Spencer served in the Civil War as a Confederate and enlisted on May 8,1861 at Charleston, WV as a sergeant in 1st Kanawha Regiment 22nd VA Infantry. He was transferred on July 25, 1861 to Co K 59th Infantry VA. Henry was captured on February 8, 1862 at Roanoke Island, NC and paroled on February 21,1862 at Elizabeth City, NC as a POW exchange. Henry Spencer's family were farmers and after the war, he married Cecilia Christein and they resided in Cincinnati,OH. He was cremated and his remains are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery/Glendale.
