Peter Hanks was 19 when he first enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov 23, 1861. He was discharged for disability on Feb 1, 1862, at Mt Pleasant, Iowa, where the 4th Iowa was at Camp Harlan.

On March 18, 1863, he enlisted for the second time, this time into Co. C of the 7th Iowa Cavalry. He served with the 7th Iowa Cavalry for the remainder of the War, and was mustered out of the service on May 17, 1866, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

Hanks applied for his pension on May 5, 1881. His application is #421,387, and his certificate #356,920.

He married Anna M. Warren in January 1867.
