After the war, Howard P. Eells, Jr. and his brothers undertook to salvage their father's failing Dolomite Products Company, which later became Basic Refractories, Inc., and emerged in the 1940s as a leader in the steel production supply industry.
During World War II, Howard P. Eells, Jr. developed and invested in facilities for the electrolytic production of magnesium metal in Nevada, which proved very profitable. Additionally, eells served on the boards of the Standard Sewing Machine Company of Cleveland, the Atchison Eastern Bridge Company, and other firms.
Following a civic-minded family tradition, Howard P. Eells, Jr. Eells served as a trustee of the Cleveland Humane Society, the Cleveland School of Art, Lake View Cemetery, and other institutions. Much of his leisure time was devoted to the collection and arrangement of genealogical material.
Howard P. Eells, who resided in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, died in 1978 in Cleveland. He was survived by his widow, Adele Corning Chisolm Eells, and three children.
